Chennai: Nearly one in every adult in TN has received at least one dose of the anti-Covid vaccine in the past six months, although only 6% of the population has completed the course, shows state immunisation wing data. Inadequate vaccinations remain a threat amid the anticipated third wave, public health experts said.<\/p>\n

The state has 6.06 crore adults requiring 12.12 crore doses (two doses each). From January 15 to July 18, 1.9 crore doses were given including 12.5 lakh at private hospitals from May 1. On Monday, 2.35 lakh got jabs and the number of vaccinations in private hospitals rose to 12.82 lakh.<\/p>\n

Vaccinations, however, aren\u2019t uniform. At least 47% of people in Nilgiris and 36% in Chennai have taken at least one dose. At least nine health units had fewer than 20% of the population vaccinated. At least 26 health units had fewer than 5% of population vaccinated. Health minister Ma Subramanian said: \u201cOn Monday morning we had 3.42 lakh doses. If we don\u2019t receive the next batch soon many districts will go dry by Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senior virologist Jacob John drew examples from abroad to show how vaccinations reduced hospitalisations and deaths. \u201cIn the US, you see a clear divide of increase in deaths among states that are vaccinated and others who haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Immunising people, particularly the elderly and those with comorbidities, with available vaccines can result in high immunity (both antibody and T-cell immunity). \u201cBut instead of prioritising those people we allowed all adults to take the vaccine despite shortage\u2026,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The immunization wing aims to cover the entire population in smaller health units with at least one dose. \u201cThe second dose seems delayed because there is at least 80 days difference between doses for Covershield.
